Earthism Part 4 (Ch 10) The Theology of Earthism

Earthism Part 4 (Ch 10) The Theology of Earthism

In this chapter of his book, Cobb gives impassioned plea for humanity and Christianity to integrate the Earthist paradigm as devotion.  Cobb is careful not to equate the earth to divinity directly, "Earth is not God, and God is not Earth".  However, to rid us of the excesses of economism, adopting a story which centers our moral and economic life directly on the earth in community with life.

Here are my notes for Ch 10 of the book "An Earthist Challenge to Economism."

I agree with Cobb, that the way Earthism will assimilate into people's awareness and create care for the earth is through the earth story. The Earth story tells us we are connected to the cosmos.  The very atoms in our bodies are literally star dust of exploding stars which all the heavy elements forged in super novae.  An Earthist Theology teaches that humans emerged out of and are related to all other life beings on the planet.

Cobb asks the question to Christians:

What holds you to your faith, is it because it holds final answers and makes our life pure and virtuous? Or is it because Earthist faith holds up sufficiently complex short stories to illumine the changing situation in which we find ourselves protecting the earth?
